Those who know me know that I'm distrustful of many aspects of the traditional view of hierarchy in the workplace. I espouse "weird" ideas like Holacracy, scoff at the robotic behaviour many humans think they should follow, and nurture an amused scepticism towards titles.
Don't get me wrong, titles are necessary. Without them, you'd have to repeatedly convey to everyone who doesn't know you well, at least the gist of your capabilities and responsibilities. They tend, however, to reflect the unidimensional view of hierarchy, as seen from the top, almost always lack nuance, and rarely do they capture the fact that people can wear multiple hats.
So I propose an exercise (if you haven't dismissed me as a lunatic by now): have titles be crowdsourced by those working directly with the person. Make it a fun (and safe, yes) exercise. I bet many good and appreciative things will come out of it, and people will most likely wear them with newfound pride. Even if HR later vetoes them, at least you get to see their faces. 😉
